Some Material Used in Typical Straps
Nylon
With a high break strength and excellent abrasion resistance, nylon strapping is a popular choice. It is relatively economical to produce and it’s balanced characteristics make it a common choice for military use, harnesses, and child safety products.
Polyester
Because it stretches very little, polyester strapping is often preferred. It has high strength and a high melting point. It is often used in applications such as fall restraint, tie downs, and lifting slings. It is highly resistant to UV rays, so there’s a preference for it in outdoor and maritime endeavors.
Kevlar®
Using aramid fiber, Kevlar® straps are desirable when products need to be flame and heat resistant, have high tenacity, resist elongation or distortion, and withstand chemicals. It is widely used in safety applications for such things as protective clothing, security products, and firefighting equipment.
Elastic
Because it can alter the varying degrees of stretch in manufactured products, elastic strapping has a wide range of uses including apparel, crafts, automotive, and furniture.
Polypropylene
Available in a wide range of colors and widths, polypropylene strapping is both versatile and economical. It is often used in applications for the military, child safety, sporting goods, and luggage.
Cotton
While not as strong as synthetic fibers, cotton is used in certain applications where softness, flexibility, light abrasion, and breathability are desired. However, it is more susceptible to moisture and degradation.
